Preface
Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is going all in for the Olympics, stretching its offerings to attack Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) and Twitter Inc. (NYSE:TWTR).
THE STORY
Alphabet Inc. has dedicated itself to winning our time spent on following the upcoming Rio Olympics it was looks like a direct attack on Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. by flexing its muscle on several properties: search, maps, and streaming online video. Here are the details.
Source: Google Official Blog
First, Alphabet Inc. has pushed an update that allows Google search users to get schedules, medal counts, athlete information, and TV schedules in more than 30 countries without needing to click on search results (Source: Fortune). But that's tame compared to how else Alphabet Inc. is going after Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc.
Next, Alphabet Inc. will try to make Google Maps the center of its ecosystem both for people at the games and for people away, trying to get a feel for Rio. In Google's official blog, the company posted a note today entitled "Let Google be your guide to Rio de Janeiro" where it spells out all of the updates. But the biggest move is the actual attack on Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) and Twitter Inc. (NYSE:TWTR), and of course that means it comes from Alphabet Inc. and Google's YouTube.
Alphabet Inc. will be broadcasting event highlights more than 60 countries while tying its Google Search app both iOS and Android into the mix by pushing notifications to users about any event or athlete they have earmarked as of interest.
While Facebook Inc. has made partnership with NBC to be the official "social command center" of the Olympics, the real attack comes online and for this battle, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has not only pushed the hardest in the attack to win users, but has also discredited some of the remarks from Twitter Inc. that implied the Olympics were in fact not that big of deal as an advertising boost in the quarter. It appears Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) disagrees, and has gone on the attack.
This is Google's first salvo in what may end up being an all-out attack on both Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) and Twitter Inc. (NYSE:TWTR) in the world of live streaming sports and highlights -- a field that Twitter has made immense progress in over the last few months. But there's a winner that comes from all of this, and it's none of these three companies.
The author is long shares of Twitter Inc. (NYSE:TWTR).
WHY THIS MATTERS
Facebook and Google just crushed earnings and nearly all of their business comes from advertising. But that world is changing dramatically toward video in a sort of revolution in the way online content will be used, and how advertising will be paid for. It turns out that there is one technology company that will power this revolution, regardless of whether it's Facebook, Google, Twitter, or whomever that will end up with the largest audience.
